Established four years ago, JayThom is an organisation with an expanding customer base from a diverse range of industries. The company implements, supports and maintains the database and CRM needs of businesses as well as consulting as to what is the best and most productive CRM solution for each particular industry.

“We have ten staff members and are continuing to grow,” said Brett Yorgey, JayThom’s Managing Director. Two years ago the company moved to larger premises in the seaside Melbourne suburb of Sandringham. Yorgey states that they undertook the necessary though costly and disruptive cabling works to create Ethernet outlets for the employees’ computers on the company’s local area network (LAN).

Today, the company continues to expand and has staff coming into and out of the office at different times of the day, depending on customer commitments, who need to access their computers. New computer outlets were needed urgently.

“We just didn’t want to go through the hassle involved with an electrician cabling expert coming out and drilling holes and panels to run new cables. The mess, the dust that gets into everything, noise , the impact on productivity for three to four new outlets was hard to justify – not to mention the hundreds of dollars,” said Yorgey.

Instant bandwidth wherever there’s AC power

On hearing about AdvaTel’s Powerline85 (PL85) technology, Yorgey took immediate interest. The PL85 has an 85Mbps transmission rate, provides high speed, reliable and secure data transmission over power lines within a building.

“The simplest way to put it is, wherever there’s AC power, we can have instant bandwidth available to us. We installed the PL85 in less than five minutes and had a new computer outlet available to us at one of the power points ,” said an elated Yorgey. “Our PL85 wall plugs have delivered to us a quick, safe and economical solution as well as providing genuine flexibility with regard to where we want to move our computer access points depending on access needs for each week.”

At approximately $250 per set, JayThom believes it has found a unique solution to create ‘instant’ broadband LAN connections for the company with the added bonus of not being limited to the first location chosen. Yorgey states that on one day they moved the plugs five times as needed by the business – something impossible to do with traditional wiring. “As new staff join the company, there’s just no issue with regard to network access,” said Yorgey.

Moreover, the company had an issue with its boardroom which only had one Ethernet point. Due to the type of business services the company undertakes, the presentations and demonstrations it delivers to prospective customers requires the use of a number of computers hooked up to the network. The boardroom needed additional access points.

JayThom, in its attempts to avoid going the cabling way, tried to use WI-FI but with no success. Reception was at best intermittent as well as weak due to the concrete walls that form the board room. The PL85 units were a simple and effective solution that continues to deliver a viable solution.

Ethernet over mains wiring? Simple. Secure

“It seemed too easy and quick to be really workable. But it is and it does,” said Yorgey. The company experiences consistent traffic speed and flow even with four units in power points acting as network access outlets and being used by employees. From a user point of view, they cannot detect if they are on a traditional Ethernet connection or Ethernet over mains wiring.

From a security perspective, JayThom was assured that the other business suites within their area could not ‘spy or hack into’ their network. The technology does not suffer from the problems of wireless solutions that require PC hardware as well and someone with IT knowledge to set it up. Today, wireless still brings with it serious security issues as well as inconsistent transmission coverage.

AdvaTel’s PL85 equipment ensures complete security of data and as well as the inability for hackers to access the bandwidth. Security is inbuilt with each unit. The first level of security is provided via a pass word. Only PL85 units with the same password can send and receive data between each other. The second level of security is covered by the actual transmission between the PL85 units being encrypted. The encryption levels are high and use 56 Bit DES.

Yorgey concludes, “The PL85 technology is really revolutionary. This is what technology should be all about – delivering real productivity and flexibility to businesses.”
